The Australian Heritage Council (AHC) is assessing 3 historic properties in Parramatta, NSW. They are being assessed for inclusion on the National Heritage List.
The early colonial farming properties are being assessed together as one ‘place’. They are:
- Elizabeth Farm
- Experiment Farm
- Hambledon Cottage.
The initial assessment shows they may have National Heritage values. This recognises their historical role in Australia’s agriculture, pastoralism, land ownership and architecture.
Elizabeth Farm, built in 1793, is considered to be the oldest surviving colonial dwelling in Australia. It was originally part of the same estate as Hambledon Cottage. They were owned by merino wool industry pioneers, John and Elizabeth Macarthur. Experiment Farm was originally granted to ex-convict James Ruse.
